Why Yankees' CC Sabathia is so optimistic despite alarming MRI results on hamstring

ANAHEIM -- Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia took a trip to a local hospital Wednesday to find out how badly he'd strained his left hamstring pitching the night before.

After a several hours of waiting and hoping, Sabathia was alerted that his MRI results didn't jive with how he was feeling a day later ... "a whole better than I expected."

His strain was diagnosed as a Grade 2 ... aka moderate strain.

That's better than a Grade 3, which can lead to surgery, but Sabathia was hoping for the least severe, a Grade 1 strain.

A Grade 1 can take up to three weeks to recover.
