Top prospect’s elbow update adds to Yankees misery

Pitching prospect James Kaprielian was diagnosed with a flexor tendon strain in the right elbow after being seen by team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad.

The 22-year-old will also be evaluated by Dr. Neal ElAttrache within the next week.

The 2015 first-round pick (16th overall) has been shut down since April at Class-A Tampa with inflammation in the elbow.

“His ligament is fine,” Girardi said of the possibility of Kaprielian having to undergo Tommy John surgery. “Some people think a flexor [strain] can be a precursor. I hope not.”

The team is making progress in negotiations with this year’s first round pick, Blake Rutherford.
