While Luis Severino was showing off his electric wares in The Bronx on Wednesday night, two more from the Yankees’ collection of “untouchable” prospects were enjoying eye-opening nights in the minors.
Speedy 20-year-old shortstop hope Jorge Mateo was terrific in his debut with High-A Tampa, going 4-for-6 out of the leadoff spot with a triple and a stolen base. Mateo was promoted this week after posting a .268/.338/.378 slash line with 71 steals in 96 games for Low-A Charleston.
Meanwhile, Triple-A first baseman Greg Bird crushed two home runs and a triple in a win for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where Severino spent much of the summer.
