Starlin Castro’s return to old position not exactly smooth

DETROIT — Starlin Castro’s career as a shortstop isn’t completely over.

Castro started at his former position Thursday for the first time this season, with Joe Girardi opting to keep Didi Gregorius out of the starting lineup against Tigers lefty Matt Boyd.

“It’s fun to be out there again,” said Castro, who hadn’t taken grounders at short during batting practice since spring training. “It’s my natural position, so I always like playing there.”

He was late, though, covering second on a forceout to end the fifth, and he barely got there in time to beat Cameron Maybin and catch Rob Refsnyder’s toss.
