The 22-year-old Severino has struggled this season after enjoying success in his first 11 Major League starts, beginning last August. He permitted seven hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings on Friday, raising his ERA from 6.12 to 7.46.
Despite the issues, the Yankees had been reluctant to demote Severino to the Minors, in part because CC Sabathia is on the 15-day disabled list with a groin strain. General manager Brian Cashman said prior to Friday's start that the Yankees had been encouraged by Severino's progress.
"He's competing and battling, and he's dealing with struggles for an extended period of time for the first time in his career," Cashman said.
