Reds got a ‘steal’ getting Sonny Gray: Yankees pitcher

At least one Yankee was sad to see Sonny Gray go, and believes the Reds made out well in the trade.

“Cincinnati got a steal,” starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery told NJ.com on Thursday.

The Yankees sent the disappointing right-hander to the Reds for minor-league second baseman Shed Long, who was immediately traded to the Mariners, in January. Gray was then given a three-year, $30 million deal by his new team.

“That’s why Cincinnati locked him up as fast as they could have,” Montgomery said. “I think, for his sake, I think we’re going to see the guy who was in Oakland, a top-three Cy Young winner and I think he’s going to get back to form and be the guy he’s always been.
