The Yankees began their spring training roster trimming this week by making 11 cuts on Sunday and three more on Monday. The reductions have their roster down to 53 players ... 24 pitchers, 16 infielders, eight outfielders, four catchers and one designated hitter.
The Yanks need to get down to 25 before their April 2 season opener against the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.
They're planning is to keep 13 position players and 12 pitchers, but there still are roster battles going on for two open rotation spots, three open bullpen jobs, maybe a spot in the outfield, and perhaps the utility infielder and backup catcher spots.
