Managing challenge that could ruin Yankees, Mets playoff hopes

This is what you all want, right? Shoot, we haven’t enjoyed a September like this since, well … 2007.

Sorry, Mets fans.

It’s just that ’07 did mark the last season when both New York clubs opened baseball’s stretch drive in playoff position. The most recent year when both sides of the Throgs Neck Bridge lived and died with every pitch, every manager’s decision, every result.

And with that roller coaster of emotions comes particular stress about the team’s bullpens — the overall depth and the workload of the reliable entities.

With 30 games left for the Yankees (74-58) and 29 for the Mets (74-59), with the Yankees kicking off a 10-game homestand Friday against Tampa Bay and the Mets launching a 10-game road trip Friday in Miami, the heat is on managers Joe Girardi and Terry Collins to find the sweet spot in using their pair of relief aces.
