TAMPA -- Two steps forward, two steps back.
Yankees first baseman Greg Bird clubbed a pair of doubles in Monday's 4-1 win over the Orioles at Ed Smith Stadium -- a sign that there's still plenty of life in the promising bat that misses all last season with injury.
The catch: He also made a pair of base running mistakes high school coaches wouldn't excuse -- a sign that there's still plenty of rust to bang off before Opening Day.
"You try to weigh the good that he did (Monday) against the mistakes and you just try to eliminate those," manager Joe Girardi said.
