Father of star pitcher Jason Groome arrested on drug, weapon charges in Barnegat

TOMS RIVER — The father of Boston Red Sox minor league pitcher Jason Groome was arrested on drug and weapons charges on July 10 the Ocean County Prosecutors office said in a release Wednesday.

Jason Groome, 43, of Barnegat was arrested by Prosecutor’s detectives along with members of the Barnegat Township Police and Ocean County Regional SWAT team after a traffic stop at the Gunning River Mall on West Bay Avenue, Barnegat at 4:40 p.m. on July 10.

Upon inspection of the Dodge Ram Groome was driving, police seized approximately two ounces of cocaine and a defaced 9mm handgun, according to the release.
