A player who theoretically could help both New York teams – and would cost just money, not prospects – has become available.
Yulieski Gourriel was considered the best player left in Cuba when he defected last February with his younger brother, Lourdes. He was declared a free agent Monday, MLB officials confirmed (Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com was the first to report this). He is now eligible to sign with any team.
Gourriel played mainly third base and second base in Cuba, but scouts who have seen him believe he is athletic enough to play the corner outfield, as well.
