CLEARWATER, Fla. — When the Yankees welcomed pitchers and catchers to spring training, the only opening they had in the rotation was the one start CC Sabathia was going to miss due to his five-game suspension.
Three weeks later, staff ace Luis Severino has an inflamed right rotator cuff and will open the season on the injured list and Sabathia, who is closing in on Hall of Fame numbers, will join him there.
Now, Aaron Boone has three right-handers to fill two openings in the rotation with the possibility of the entire trio making the Opening Day roster.
