Carlos Beltran, With Puerto Rico on His Mind, Tries to Steady the Astros

After Hurricane Maria laid waste to Puerto Rico last month, Carlos Beltran could not sleep for about 10 days. He said he did not hear from his family there for a week, until his brother relayed stories about waiting in gas lines for nearly 24 hours and his baseball academy taking on three feet of water. More than a dozen relatives from the island temporarily moved in with Beltran’s family in the United States.

The Houston Astros owner Jim Crane let Beltran, the team’s designated hitter, use his plane to deliver supplies to Puerto Rico and Beltran has donated $1 million to relief efforts.
