NEW YORK -- Masahiro Tanaka expertly weaved through trouble for seven innings, including rearing back for a pair of crucial strikeouts to keep his lead intact, as the right-hander paced the Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Backed by a new-look lineup that included Andrew McCutchen's debut as well as Gary Sanchez's return from the disabled list, Tanaka completed back-to-back outings of seven or more innings for the first time since last Sept. 2, helping the Yankees win for the 11th time in 15 games.
