Bill Stafford, Marshall Bridges and crazy Yankees-Red Sox game from 1962

Bill Stafford was in control of things on the mound for the Yankees on September 15, 1962 against the Red Sox. The Yankees’ starter had allowed one unearned run in seven innings. That run came on an error by first baseman Clete Boyer in the first inning. The only hit that Stafford had allowed all game also came in the first inning.

The Yankees’ offense had given Stafford a lead, but not a big one. Roger Maris hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, and Tom Tresh hit a solo homer in the fifth, but that was it.
