2011 draft busts and stars who help explain Yankees-Red Sox divide

There were 132 players from the 2011 draft in the majors this season, tied with 2012 for the most represented year. Therefore, if you did well in the draft, you would have some prime-aged players from it.

The Red Sox did well. They had four first-round picks, in part as compensation for losing Adrian Beltre and Victor Martinez in free agency. Three of them, Matt Barnes, Blake Swihart and Jackie Bradley Jr., were contributors to the AL champs, and with the 172nd pick overall, Boston took a Tennessee high school shortstop named Mookie Betts.

By comparison, the Yankees did not have extra picks, but their first four rounds of selections went wrong.
