Yankees Rumors: Yankees to pursue Ervin Santana, Jonathan Papelbon?

If you thought Yankees rumors would quiet down after the signing of Japanese superstar pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, think again.

According to numerous MLB sources, the New York Yankees aren't done shopping yet, with Phillies' closer Jonathan Papelbon and free agent starting pitcher Ervin Santana linked to the Yankees as potential upgrades to their pitching staff.

There have been rumors buzzing around the Yankees since the Tanaka signing that New York Yankees' management is not quite convinced in either Michael Pineda or David Phelps as the answer for the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Adding Ervin Santana would give the Yankees a proven top-half of the rotation guy to plug in alongside Sabathia and Tanaka. Despite a 9-10 record with the Royals in 2013, he had a career-low 3.24 ERA along with a very solid 1.14 WHIP in 211 innings pitched.

Former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon looks to be an intriguing fit for a New York Yankees bullpen in flux after losing legendary closer Mariano Rivera to retirement. The Phillies have not hidden the fact that they will trade Papelbon for the right return, and despite posting just 29 saves in 2013, he still would give the Yankees a proven closer that could take pressure off of young David Robertson if he struggles out of the gate.
