Yankees Rumors: Ivan Nova out for the year, elbow surgery soon

In Yankees rumors today, the New York Yankees have suffered a huge blow to their starting rotation with Ivan Nova now out for the year with a torn ligament in his elbow.

Per Wallace Matthews of ESPN.com, Nova "has opted to have Tommy John surgery to repair the partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. The team announced the surgery will be performed by Dr. James Andrews, a specialist in the procedure, on Tuesday in Birmingham."

The typical recovery period from Tommy John surgery is a year to eighteen months, most likely keeping Nova out of the Yankees' rotation till the middle of next season.

"I spoke to him (Wednesday), and I think it's the way he was leaning," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Nova's earlier decision to get a second opinion on his elbow . "Obviously it's difficult to go through, but a lot of times they come back stronger."

In four starts with the New York Yankees in 2014, Nova was 2-2 with an 8.27 ERA. He is 40-22 over his four-plus season in the Majors with an ERA of 4.20.
