Yankees News: Brian Cashman Talks Alex Rodriguez, Wants Him To Prove He Can Play 3rd Base

There are plenty of underlying issues at play with the return of formerly-exiled New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, but there's also the matter of A-Rod's advancing age that is causing the team to be cautious about just how much stock they put into him for 2015.

“He’s 39 years old, almost 40, and he hasn’t really played in 15 months, so there are lots of question marks,” Cashman said, via Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. “Chase Headley is our third baseman, but we’ll see if Alex shows he can still play some third base for us again in certain situations.”

Cashman says its not necessarily a matter of A-Rod's dedication to his body, especially after Yankees strength and conditioning coach Matt Krause visited A-Rod twice over the offseason to check in.

“Alex has always worked hard on his conditioning,” Cashman said.

However, advancing age is what it is, and the Yankees remain staunch in their belief that A-Rod will have to earn his at-bats and work in the field by showing he can still compete.
