The Yankees were one of the few teams not to make any moves of note at Winter Meetings, but they still need some serious help in their pitching rotation and reinforcements in the infield. Here's the latest as of Friday:
Brandon McCarthy
The Yankees getting priced out? That isn't something fans are used to, but that's exactly what GM Brian Cashman says happened with McCarthy. "[we] figured the market would take him at a level that we couldn’t play on”, Cashman told MLB.com's Brian Hoch.
Max Scherzer
With the number of available pitchers shrinking rapidly, the Yankees are expected to step up their interest in Scherzer (they're denying in public, but don't put much stock in that). There's an interesting wrinkle, though, per MLB.com's Jason Beck. The Tigers will apparently get the chance to match any offer for Scherzer, since Scott Boras is such good pals with Detroit owner Mike Ilitch. This doesn't guarantee Scherzer stays in Detroit - he'll go wherever he wants to go - but it's worth keeping an eye on the Tigers as the market for Scherzer heats up.
James Shields
Shields is an option for the Yankees, but nothing is close at this stage. We've heard Shields is chasing a long-term deal north of $150 million, which could be a stumbling block for the Yankees or any other team questioning his postseason effectiveness.
Chase Headley
Nothing new to report since yesterday's update...Headley is considering several offers, with New York's three-year offer unlikely to lead anywhere - the 3B wants a four-year commitment at minimum.
Other Moves
The Yankees are keeping three spots on their 40-man roster open...which suggests they're planning to bring in at least three more players before the stove cools off. The Yankees have been awfully quiet over the last two days, though, and we're under the impression that nothing is imminent unless Chase Headley signs.
