Backups Step Up to Prove Worth

With Ivan Nova coming back to the majors and someone needing to be sent down to the minors, the back-up players for the Yankees stepped up to prove their value to the club.

Eric Chavez, who is filling in for an injured Alex Rodriguez, went 2-4 today with two RBIs and two runs scored. Chavez also made a few defensive gems, including a backwards catch in the seventh inning.

Left fielder Chris Dickerson went 2-4 in the first game of today’s doubleheader with a run scored and a clutch two-out RBI. Dickerson also showed off his speed with a stolen base in the fifth inning.

At the bottom of the line-up was catcher Francisco Cervelli who went 2-3 with an RBI, run scored, and a walk. Cervelli’s double in the third would have scored Dickerson, but the ball bounced over the wall and the runners had to stop at second and third.

Cashman and Yankee execs have not said yet whom they will send down in place of Nova, but Chavez, Dickerson, and Cervelli gave them something to think about.
