Red Bulls’ terrific season goes down in flames — again

Last weekend the Red Bulls saw Montreal snap their unbeaten streak. On Sunday, it was their collective hearts that got broken.

The top-seeded Red Bulls got knocked out of the Eastern Conference semifinals, losing 2-1 to visiting Montreal and falling by an aggregate 3-1 scoreline. It’s a galling end to a great campaign, the team’s best regular-seasons again ending with failure in the postseason.

After finishing atop the Eastern Conference for the third time in four years – and back-to-back seasons – the Red Bulls’ golden era is tarnished. An original MLS team from 1996, they’ve still only made their one MLS Cup finals appearance in 2008 and haven’t gotten back since.
