Red Bulls look to Austria for their Lloyd Sam replacement

Sports

It didn’t take long for the Red Bulls to replace winger Lloyd Sam, and that replacement is Daniel Royer, a league source confirmed.

The 26-year-old Royer is a midfielder who has played six times for the Austrian national team. Multiple European reports said he was expected to transfer from Danish club Midtjylland to the Red Bulls within the week for about $225,000.

Midtjylland won the Danish title last year relying on advanced analytics and a Moneyball system that mirrors that of the Red Bulls. The 5-foot-9 Royer is regarded as a quick, tricky dribbler with a surprising shot.
