Red Bulls clear way for third star by unloading Lloyd Sam

The Red Bulls traded wide midfielder Lloyd Sam to rival D.C United for allocation money.

“I’m in tears right now,’’ Sam tweeted after the move.

The amount of general allocation money is still unclear, but two separate sources within MLS told The Post it was a considerable amount. It could be used multiple ways, including to add another attacking talent, which coach Jesse Marsch admitted the club is looking to do.

Sam had played all five of his MLS seasons with the Red Bulls, playing a role in winning two Supporters’ Shields. But the 31-year-old Sam – who always has relied heavily on speed – appeared to lose a half-step, and was asked to tuck inside more and more frequently.
