For the first time in three years, the Red Bulls have lost the Hudson River Derby in a 3-2 defeat. It was a back-and-forth contest that saw three lead changes and five goals - three from David Villa and two from Bradley Wright-Phillips.
Things seemed destined to play out poorly for the Red Bulls early as Daniel Royer suffered a scary-looking knee injury before the 15' mark. The game went to halftime tied 1-1 as Villa and BWP tallied for their teams.
BWP would get his second goal of the game early in the second, but David Villa would not be denied as he scored a screamer from open play and then on a penalty after a Sal Zizzo kick to the face.
