Rafael “Rafa” Marquez – who played for the NY Red Bulls before becoming captain of Mexico’s National Team – has been secretly acting as a frontman for a Mexican drug kingpin, according to the US Treasury Dept.

Marquez, 37, is one of close to two dozen people the Treasury Dept. on Wednesday said has been helping hide drug proceeds for Raul Flores Hernandez and the Flores Drug Trafficking Organization.

Marquez — along with Mexican singer Julion Alvarez — were added to the Treasury Dept.’s “kingpin” list as a result of their alleged ties to Hernandez, who maintains “strategic alliances” with Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel and the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, the federal agency said.
