Toronto FC midfielder Sebastian Giovinco’s class outshined the Red Bulls’ grit when his free kick beautifully curled into the net in the 72nd minute Monday night to push Toronto past the Red Bulls, 2-1, at a hostile Red Bull Arena, in the first leg of the MLS Eastern Conference semifinals.
After being dragged down just outside the Red Bulls box, Giovinco curled his kick over the Red Bulls’ wall and tucked it inside the near post past Luis Robles and defender Michael Murillo, who appeared to screen Robles on the play when he jumped for the ball at the post.
