Here was the single most truthful and prescient thing said around the NHL’s trade deadline this past Wednesday.
“If you want a player in this type of market,” Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton said, “generally you’re going to overpay.”
Gorton was talking about the market as it shaped up this year, with a handful teams on the periphery of the playoff picture deciding to sell rather than try to make a run. (Good idea, by the way.) But he easily could have been talking about any year in the recent past, an easy reminder coming in his own paltry stockpile of draft picks.
