Rangers' Mika Zibanejad placed in COVID protocol

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Mika Zibanejad was placed in COVID protocol Saturday, leaving the Rangers in danger of being without their first-line center for Sunday’s game at Madison Square Garden against the Buffalo Sabres.

Zibanejad did not take part in practice Saturday. Greg McKegg skated in his place in between wingers Chris Kreider and Barclay Goodrow.

Zibanejad missed all of training camp last season after coming down with COVID-19, and after the season admitted that his sluggish first half was due to him struggling with recovering from the illness. Being placed in COVID protocol, though, does not necessarily mean a player has COVID.
