Rangers handed No. 1 draft pick in second phase of lottery with top prospect Alexis Lafreniere in sight

For just the second time in their 94-year history, the Rangers will pick first in the NHL Draft.

A ping-pong ball with a Rangers logo was drawn during the second phase of the NHL’s lottery Monday, handing the team the top pick in October’s entry draft.

The Rangers were one of eight teams eligible to win Monday’s second phase, each of which had a 12.5% chance to win the top pick.

Forward Alexis Lafreniere, the 2019 Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year and the MVP of the 2020 World Junior Championship, is widely considered the top prospect available.
