EDMONTON, Alberta — The blue banner with orange trim bearing the Oilers’ logo, silhouettes of five Stanley Cups and the name, “SATHER” was raised to the rafters of Rexall Center on Friday night.
“I sincerely wish that everyone here now experiences something, anything in your life, that makes you feel like I do right now,” Glen Sather said before walking off the ice after the 40-minute ceremony hand in hand with his wife, Ann. “The luckiest person on earth.”
This was a marvelous, touching ceremony that hit all of the right notes in honoring the Hockey Hall of Fame builder for his 24-year-career as a player, coach, general manager and president of the Oilers, beginning in 1976, when the franchise played in the WHA.
