Jacques Martin named new assistant coach of Rangers

In yesterday’s installment of Sportsnet’s 31 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman noted that recently fired Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach Jacques Martin could replace Lindy Ruff behind the New York Rangers’ bench. Today, the Rangers made that report official.

Like Ruff, Martin has a reputation as a defense-first coach.

Per Behind the Benches, Martin shared defensive coaching duties in Pittsburgh with Sergei Gonchar, but was at the helm of the Penguins’ penalty kill.
