Igor Shesterkin backstops Rangers to win hyped debut

It surely wasn’t the best start, but the result was just what Igor Shesterkin and the Rangers wanted.

The heir apparent to Henrik Lundqvist, Shesterkin made his NHL debut and was able to do enough to backstop the Rangers to a 5-3 win over the Avalanche at the Garden on Tuesday night. The 24-year-old gave up a goal on the first shot he faced, and on the third, his team falling behind 2-0 in the opening 6:34.

But they battled back, he stayed poised during a third-period onslaught, and a three-game losing streak ended in dramatic fashion.
