SAN DIEGO — If Dillon Gee thought his groin hurt before he went on the disabled list, the Padres provided him a new level of discomfort in that region Wednesday night.
In a performance that will only increase the clamor for the Mets to promote stud lefty Steven Matz to the major leagues, Gee tossed four-plus brutal innings, sending the Mets to a 7-3 loss at Petco Park.
Gee, who hadn’t faced major league competition in a month after straining his right groin, allowed seven runs, three of which were unearned, on eight hits and a walk with a hit batter before departing in the fifth inning.
