If there had been high school yearbook-style awards distributed to the freshman class of Mets and Yankees after the 2016 season — first-time New York players, be they rookies or veterans — little doubt exists over which honor would’ve gone to Jay Bruce:

Yet there Bruce stood Wednesday at Citi Field, the star of a news conference to welcome him back for three years and $39 million after he finished last season with the Indians.

New York grew on him, Bruce said. The Mets’ management scored points with him.
