WASHINGTON -- Wally Backman is out as the manager of the New York Mets' Triple-A affiliate, general manager Sandy Alderson said Monday.
Alderson portrayed Backman's departure as the popular former Met's decision, although reports indicated Backman was pushed by Alderson.
Backman, 56, has managed in the organization since 2010, including the team's Triple-A affiliate for the last five seasons.
"Wally has decided to move on," Alderson said. "He's got other opportunities, presumably including possible major league coaching or managing."
Las Vegas went 70-74 this season, but had posted winning seasons the previous three years.
