Wally Backman leaves Mets organization

Wally Backman, the manager for Triple-A Las Vegas, has left the New York Mets organization, GM Sandy Alderson announced on Monday.

On whether he was fired or he resigned, Backman told the Bergen Record's Bob Klapisch he resigned.

Backman, 56, will be pursuing other opportunities, including possibly a job as a major league manager. Alderson said he hopes to find a replacement for Backman sometime in the next few weeks.

Backman declined comment to the New York Post's Mike Puma, but said, "I will have plenty to say later."

Backman, according to Puma, was told he would have been fired three years ago had COO Jeff Wilpon not intervened.
