Update: Steven Matz will have elbow surgery, won't pitch again in 2016

The Mets have announced that Steven Matz will be out for the rest of the season due to a sore left shoulder. The shoulder will not require surgery.

However, Matz will undergo surgery next week to remove bone spurs in his left elbow at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

ESPN.com's Adam Rubin says Matz will need three months to recover from having the bone spur removed, which should allow him plenty of time to be ready for next year's spring training.

Matthew Cerrone: Well, the good news is that having a bone spur removed from an elbow is somewhat common for a pitcher.
