This week, Rob Wolff travels back to the early 2000s, when a utility infielder named Marco Scutaro came into the Mets organization and made his MLB debut as an unheralded 26 year-old rookie.
While his time as a Met may have made Scutaro seem that he would be as unmemorable as he apparently was to Bobby Valentine upon their introductions at his callup, Scutaro set a trail for a tradition that would be notably continued by Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy—middle infielders who thrived after the Mets had given up on them.
