CINCINNATI — Remember, the Mets faced two dilemmas when they committed to Jose Reyes in late June.
The first covered the ethics of signing a player who had agreed to serve a lengthy suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic-violence policy. That will and should remain unanswered and discussed forevermore.
The second, though? That concerned Reyes’ skills as a baseball player. As in whether he had any left. That question has been answered with authority. With high impact on this National League playoff race.
Reyes slammed the first pitch of Wednesday’s game over Great American Ball Park’s right-field wall, and the Mets led the rest of the way, prevailing over the awful Reds in a 6-3 slog of a contest that, while requiring 3 hours and 29 minutes to complete in 87-degree heat, put the heat once again on the Cardinals and Giants to stay ahead of the scalding-hot Mets (five straight wins and 14-4 in their last 18) in their night contests.
