Steven Matz’s season is over.
The Mets left-hander is opting for surgery to remove the bone spur from his pitching elbow, according to ESPN. The report said that no shoulder surgery is required, which would have had a more dire long-term impact.
Matz has not pitched in a big league game since mid-August, when he hit the DL with left shoulder tightness. The 25-year-old had been a “long-shot” hope for a late-season rotation boon and a possible playoff option. But the left-hander was scratched from his return start, which was set to be last Friday, after Matz felt recurring shoulder soreness following a bullpen session Wednesday.
