Steven Matz puts up zeroes, but it took a lot of work

Steven Matz has nothing to show in the win column for a strong start to his 2019 season.

Matz threw five scoreless innings, albeit a laborious five, before the Mets pulled out a battle of the bullpens Saturday with five home runs for a 6-5 win over the Nationals at Citi Field.

The left-hander’s day essentially was shortened because he needed 51 pitches to navigate the first two innings, but manager Mickey Callaway was impressed to see his No. 4 starter fight through those trouble spots and post five zeroes before the bats awoke late in his team’s sixth win in eight games.
