Pete Alonso didn’t need to participate in this year’s Home Run Derby to send one out of Truist Park. Facing Royals starter Kris Bubic with two on and no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning of the All-Star Game, Alonso drilled a 2-1 fastball over the right field fence, giving the National League a commanding 5-0 lead.
With one swing, Alonso became the first Met ever to record three RBI in a single All-Star Game, and just the third — along with Lee Mazzilli and David Wright — to hit a homer in the midsummer classic.
