Born on September 30, 1992 in Beverly, Massachusetts, Matthew Budgell was drafted by the Mets in the 10th round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of Woodbridge High School, a public school in Irvine, California. A shortstop until he was an upperclassman, the right-hander took to pitching fairly quickly. In his senior season that spring, he posted a 4.02 ERA in 40.0 innings pitched, allowing 48 hits, walking 18, and striking out 33.
