Mourning Mets drop the hammer on Phillies

The last thing the Mets, or any baseball team, felt like doing Sunday was playing a game. The baseball world mourned the death of one of its own, Marlins All-Star Jose Fernandez, killed in a boating accident.

But as Mets manager Terry Collins stressed, the baseball world must go on.

“We’ll get through because we have to,” said Collins, whose Mets start a series in Miami on Monday. “As you know, everybody that’s ever played the game knows, it has to go on.”

So the Mets, in their final regular season home game, went at it and strengthened their hold on a wild-card spot, trouncing the sad-sack Phillies 17-0 in contender-vs.
