UPDATE: June 28
The Mets will give Steven Matz, who has a bone spur in his elbow, an extra day of rest. He’ll start on Thursday against the Cubs at Citi Field instead of Wednesday.
Logan Verrett will start in Matz’ place against the Nationals on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
Mets GM Sandy Alderson said Matz will be monitored on a start-by-start basis and that the spur will likely have to be removed — hopefully at the end of the season.
If Matz has surgery now to remove the spur, he’ll need three months to recover, according to Alderson.
