Mets sign Jose Martinez

The Mets continue to flesh out the rest of their roster, as they’ve signed 1B/OF Jose Martinez to a split contract. Martinez will make $1 million with up to $500K in incentives if he cracks the major league roster and $225K if in the minors. It’s not the biggest splash of the offseason for sure, but it’s encouraging to see the new Mets regime investing in real roster depth.

Martinez debuted in 2016 with the Cardinals and really broke out the following season. posting a 136 wRC+ over 307 PA. He was almost as good in a full season in 2018, but slumped closer to league average in more limited playing time in 2019 before being traded (along with Randy Arozarena) to the Rays last January.
