Mets’ Jason Vargas shows his renaissance is not a fluke

Turns out the Mets just needed their stopper to take the mound.

Jason Vargas’ shutout streak is over, but his renaissance is not, as the veteran lefty crafted together six innings to help the Mets salvage a split of the Subway Series doubleheader with a 10-4 win in the nightcap.

Coming off his complete-game shutout of the Giants last Wednesday, Vargas survived a Yankees lineup that had crushed Zack Wheeler in the first game of the doubleheader. After squaring up Wheeler’s high velocity, the Yankees couldn’t do as much damage against Vargas, who consistently sat in the mid-80s with his fastball and worked in a low changeup that Mickey Callaway said got better as the night went on.
