Mets go through formality of agreeing to contract with Jenrry Mejia

The Mets agreed to a one-year contract with RH reliever Jenrry Mejia -- who is banned for life from baseball -- in what was a formality, according to the Associated Press.

Mejia agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.7 million, though he will not receive the money unless he applies for and receives reinstatement.

The Mets and Mejia went through the same formality prior to last season, when he received a one-year deal worth $1.97 million.

Mejia was given a lifetime ban from baseball in February of 2016 after his third positive test for an illegal performance enhancing substance.
