Former minor league manager Wally Backman insisted it was his own decision to depart the Mets organization, saying he felt disrespected by top brass and was frustrated at the lack of opportunity to advance to the major league level.
The Post’s Mike Puma reported Monday, citing a club source, that Backman was fired.
In an appearance Tuesday afternoon on Mike Francesa’s show on WFAN radio, Backman angrily refuted the notion that he defied protocol in how he deployed top prospects Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo when they were under his charge at Triple-A Las Vegas.
